Our family has been working hard to help raise money for our Endowment, MiMi’s Family Fund at Wake Forest Baptist Hospital Comprehensive Cancer Center, which we started about this time last year after my diagnosis of breast cancer. We were so impressed with the medical expertise of our surgeon and her staff. The care and kindness of all at Wake Forest Comprehensive Cancer Center touched me in such a way that I wanted to do something that would make a difference.
As our family sat in the waiting room while I underwent tests and surgery, I began to think about all of the other family members of cancer patients who may need warm meals, gas money to drive back and forth to the hospital, assistance with parking tickets, or maybe a hotel room that would keep family and caregivers close to their loved one undergoing tests, treatments and surgery. We wanted to design something that would take care of immediate needs with no red tape for anyone. The Nurse Navigators will be empowered to make these little extras available to anyone they feel would benefit from funds available.
To date, we have raised about $10,000. When we reach $25,000, the hospital has pledged to match us dollar-for-dollar, and MiMi’s Family Fund will become an endowment that will last in perpetuity.
